In this evocative artwork, we encounter Lord Howe, an anthropomorphic brown rat, adorned in regal attire, symbolising the far-reaching impacts of colonialism on Australia's native wildlife. Lord Howe stands as a testament to the unintended consequences of human intervention, marked by the introduction of feral animals that led to the rapid decline of precious native species.
With dignified poise, The Rat cradles a Lord Howe Island insect in his mouth, representing the recent discovery of a once-thought-extinct species. This enigmatic insect, now found and protected in a breeding program at Zoos Victoria, serves as a bittersweet reminder of the consequences of colonial exploration and the subsequent disruption of Australia's delicate ecosystem.
