"The Buffalo, 2023", This anthropomorphic portrait tells a compelling narrative centred around the introduction of water buffalo by the British to Fort Dundas on the Melville Islands in 1826.
It was named after Robert Saunders Dundas, 2nd Viscount Melville, who brought these buffalo from Timor with the intention of utilizing them for milk, meat, and heavy labour.
Australia is now home to the world's largest population of buffalo, and it's still growing.
The buffalo's grazing activities have led to the destruction of native plants and disrupted the availability of food and shelter for other species. In aquatic environments, their presence has caused soil erosion, changes in water flow, and saltwater intrusion.
